What's included in a Perfect Build retaining wall

A retaining wall is one of the few outdoor projects where almost everything that matters is buried before the first visible block goes down. When you hire us, you're paying for the structure under the surface as much as the wall you'll see — that's the part that decides whether the wall lasts 30 years or starts leaning after two hard winters.

• Site assessment and layout — we walk the slope, find where the water actually goes during a Blue Ridge downpour, and lay out the wall line so it works with your grade instead of fighting it.
• Excavation and a compacted gravel base — we dig the trench, then build and compact a leveling pad of crushed stone so the wall sits dead-level on something that won't settle.
• A buried first course — the bottom row of block sits below finished grade (roughly the first course buried for every 8 inches of wall height) so the soil in front locks the wall in place.
• Drainage that does its job — clean drainage stone behind the wall, a perforated drain pipe at the base daylighted to somewhere safe, and filter fabric so silt doesn't clog it. Water pressure behind a wall is what topples it; we never skip this.
• Geogrid reinforcement where it's needed — on taller walls and walls holding back a real slope, we tie horizontal geogrid layers back into the hillside so the whole soil mass works as the anchor.
• Capstones and backfill — a finished cap course (adhered down), compacted backfill in lifts, and clean final grading so the top of the wall sheds water away from the structure.

How we build a retaining wall, step by step

Every wall is a little different, but the order of operations almost never changes — because the parts you can't see have to go in before the parts you can.

• 1. Walk-through and quote. We come out, look at the slope and the drainage, talk through what you're trying to gain — a level yard, a usable patio, a hillside that stops washing out — and give you an honest, itemized price. The walk-through is free.
• 2. Layout and excavation. We mark the wall line and dig the base trench to depth, accounting for the buried first course. On a hillside we'll often bench the slope so the geogrid has somewhere to grab.
• 3. Base prep. Crushed-stone leveling pad goes in and gets compacted with a plate compactor until it's solid and level. This is the single most important hour of the whole job.
• 4. First course. We set and level the bottom row block by block. If the first course is right, the rest of the wall is easy; if it's off, every course above it is off too.
• 5. Stacking, drainage, and backfill. Courses go up with the right setback so the wall leans slightly back into the hill. Drainage stone and the perforated pipe go in behind as we climb, with geogrid layers set at the engineered spacing on taller walls, and backfill compacted in lifts.
• 6. Caps and cleanup. We glue down the cap course, final-grade so water runs away from the wall, haul off the spoil, and walk the finished job with you.

For most residential walls we're talking a few days on site. Bigger terraced or reinforced walls take longer — we'll give you a real timeline up front, not a guess.

Materials, options, and what they cost you over time

There's no single "best" retaining wall material — there's the right one for your slope, your budget, and the look you're after. Here's how we talk it through with Hillsville homeowners.

• Segmental concrete block (SRW). Our default for most jobs. Engineered interlocking units with a built-in setback, dozens of colors and textures, and the easiest material to reinforce with geogrid for taller walls. Strong, predictable, and it ages well in our freeze-thaw climate.
• Natural and manufactured stone. When you want the wall to look like it grew out of the Blue Ridge. Beautiful and durable; it's more labor, so it costs more, but nothing else has that look.
• Pressure-treated timber. The budget-friendly option for shorter walls and garden terraces. Ground-contact-rated lumber with deadman tiebacks set into the bank. It won't outlast block, but for the right wall it's a smart spend.
